Lack of panmixia of Bothnian Bay vendace - implications for fisheries management
Overexploitation of fisheries is a major environmental and socioeconomic problem that may reduce biodiversity and eventually
lead to the vanishing of populations. Vendace (Coregonus albula) is a valuable fish that as most of marine fish, possesses large
population sizes and high rates of dispersal, resulting in very small levels of genetic differences between populations. In this study,
with the use of genomics, we were able to obtain whole genome data sets of several samples of vendace from Bothnian Bay that
provided us a high resolution to study the current stock structure of this species. Our findings showed low but significant genetic
structuring in the studied samples, which is relevant for fisheries management and is expected to enhance management policies
applied to this species.
