Observer Report
The first community tsunami evacuation exercise of Türkiye has been organised on 4 November 2022 in Büyükçekmece District of Istanbul within the frame of at the CoastWAVE Project funded by the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG-ECHO). The Exercise was based on an earthquake scenario prepared by Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI), Gebze Technical University (GTU), and Middle East Technical University (METU), which would trigger a tsunami that would mainly impact İstanbul but also lead to tsunami impact in other cities in the vicinity of the Marmara Sea. The evacuation part of the exercise is prepared in the coordination of KOERI with the collaboration of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Republic of Türkiye (AFAD) with the contribution of other civilian authorities, the provincial security directorate, provincial gendarmerie command, district governorship/prefecture etc. JRC-E1 has been invited to act as an Observer of the Exercise. This report has been prepared to address this function and provides a summary of observations and recommendations for future exercises.
