CATCH – Characterization of Automated Tape Composites at High strain rate
Open Access to JRC Research Infrastructures
Call 2018-1-RD-ELSA-HopLab: User Access Report
HopLab, Hopkinson Bar facility
This report presents the technical aspects of the experimental test campaign relevant to the project “CATCH - Characterisation of Automated Tape Composites at High strain rate”, whose proposal was successfully reviewed and selected in the framework of the programme for open access to JRC Research Infrastructures. The research conducted concerns the investigation of the tensile mechanical behaviour, at high strain-rates, of a series of advanced composite materials with a tape interlaced laminates structure. Specimens were partially provided by the User (the composite materials) and assembled with proper metallic parts at JRC. Static tests have been performed on a servo-hydraulic standard testing machine. High strain-rate tests have been carried out using the HopLab facility for ductile materials, modified for this peculiar application. The report also presents the elaboration of the raw experimental data in order to obtain the stress-strain curves of the tested specimens. The project has reached its objectives and the activity is deemed a success by both parties. The obtained experimental data are of high quality and of significant scientific interest for the advanced manufacturing processes and materials investigated.
