State-of-the art of Higher Trophic Level (HTL) food web ecosystem models in the North-East Atlantic Ocean, Baltic Sea and the Black seas

cover
The JRC Marine Modelling Framework (MMF), developed at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, is a tool that aims at evaluating the impacts of policy options on the environmental status of EU regional Seas. To date, the 4th component of this framework, the Higher Trophic Level, has been fully implemented for the Mediterranean Sea region while, for the other MSFD regions, further tuning and/or model development are required. Under the remit of the Blue 2.2 AA (110661-070201/2019/818363/AA/ENV.C.2) with DG Environment, this report, deliverable (#7.3) ‘Review of Modelling of HTL ecosystems in the North-East Atlantic Ocean, Baltic Sea and the Black Sea’ aims at clarifying to what extent the existing modelling network structure, available through the established Network of Experts for ReDeveloping Models of the European Marine Environment (MEME) framework, is suitable for JRC modelling management scenarios. Limitations and recommendations are highlighted
