IACS65 AA: Soil Case Studies
Soil contamination by pesticides
The overall goal was to investigate how IACS input data could be fed in fate and transport models that describe pesticide levels in soils. The hypothesis was that IACS data could be used to calibrate these models thus supporting scenarios that provide policy options. The use cases would identify the relevant IACS data for their specific scope (i.e. what IACS or IACS-related data are available in a particular Member State’s implementation) while also indicating what other data are necessary for modelling purposes (i.e. data demand). Finally, methodologies on how to close the gaps between available and requested data are proposed.
A modelling framework that integrates land management histories for LUCAS points in order to try to understand the impact of PPP residues on soil characteristics was developed using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). IACS data were used to supplement CORINE Land Cover data with more precise information on vegetative cover, and thus the related pesticide (and other contaminants) dynamics for individual parcels.
In addition, IACS data were used to help explain outliers in the pesticide dataset where there was some ambiguity regarding the long-term land use of individual parcels.
