Mitigating Risks and Maximizing Sustainability of Treated Wastewater Reuse for Irrigation
This paper is an an opinion/white paper that aims at providing a holistic overview of the challenges and potential solutions of treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation. The paper collects the contribution of multiple authors and summaries the round table discussion uindertaken during the TreWAG conference "Understanding and mitigating effects of treated wastewater reuse in agriculture: from risks to policy and new opportunities" held in Israel on 23-27 Oct 2022. The European Commission Joint Research Centre was invited to contribute to the paper with an insight on the status of the water reuse in EU and on the water reuse regulation. The paper will provide broad geographical and global perspective highlighting the transferable lessons for US and European Union by Israel, which has a long history of agricultural water reuse as well as scientific inquiry regarding this topic. Comparison of the contexts among Israel, US, and EU will aim to identify similarities, differences, and gaps in the literature.
