An exploration of science in courts - How science supports the enforcement of EU law
Lawyers and policymakers have successfully engaged with scientists to strengthen the enforcement of EU law. Within the European Commission, the JRC has provided scientific support to compliance assurance and market surveillance in several areas.
The potential of science in court is still largely uncharted at EU level and comparative studies are needed to assess challenges and opportunities, and to draw generalizable lessons.
Efforts to connect law-enforcement processes and scientific inquiry could be particularly beneficial. Work by the JRC shows that the nature of these connections vary by policy area. Equipping research centres with legal skills could help unleash the potential of their science in courts.
