IACS65 Soil Case Studies - Land degradation index

cover
Land degradation index
This report presents an overview of how data collected under the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy Integrated Administration and Control System (IACS), can contribute to a better understanding of the impacts of Land Degradation (LD) that undermine soil health in agroecosystems. LD is the persistent reduction in the capacity of the land to support humans and other life on Earth (IBPES, 2018). The UN Sustainable Development Goal 15.3.1 suggests a geospatial framework that can be adopted to perform the LD assessments based on local capacities, and data availability. IACS data are – notably - composed by the Land Parcel Information System (LPIS) and the Geospatial Aid Application (GSAA); their sharing will enable to better monitoring soil physical, chemical and biological parameters in relation to farming strategies. The overall goal was to include GSAA time series into the SDG 15.3.1 indicator geospatial framework to detect early signs of degradation due to agricultural management. The hypothesis was that LPIS and GSAA data could be used to tailor the calculation of the SDG 15.3.1 LD indicator which can add precious information on the parcels geometries and the land cover changes by providing scenarios to develop policy support options. By replacing the global sub-indicator land cover with the IACS (LPIS and GSAA) parcel land cover to assess the SDG 15.3.1 indicator was easier to find new degradation hotspots.
