Conversational agents (CAs) such as chatbots or home assistants have gained a lot of popularity in the last decade, and despite they have an adult-centred design, they have become part of children’s lives. However, children’s voices, behaviour or needs differ from adults, and this particularities pose a challenge for CAs. Considering the vulnerability of children, there is a clear need for the development of reliable systems that take children’s rights into account. In this article we present relevant ethical guidelines on AI. We also summarise some results of our previous work related to the specific case of CAs and children. In particular, we describe specific guidelines for developers to help improve CAs design towards trustworthiness and children.
