A review of policy options to increase circularity of printers and consumables in Europe
The lifecycle of imaging equipment and consumables is responsible for the generation of a relevant amount of waste and associated environmental impacts. The purpose of this study is to identify “design for circularity” strategies that can be applied in the context of product policy in order to save resources, avoid waste generation and maximise the environmental savings.
Starting from an analysis of the status quo of the imaging equipment sector in terms of market, business models, design aspects affecting circularity and current end-of-life scenarios, this study has identified existing barriers to circularity and opportunities for improvement that could be potentially addressed by mandatory environmental requirements in EU product legislation.
With this in mind, this study has reviewed “design for circularity” strategies and options currently applied by voluntary type-1 ecolabels and in the green public procurement context that could work as “proof-of-concept” for the proposal of mandatory environmental requirements.
