JRC MARS Bulletin - Global outlook - Crop monitoring European neighbourhood - Russia, October 2023
Good outlook for all crops despite weather extremes
Adequate weather conditions in most of European Russia sustained a positive yield outlook for winter cereals at national level, albeit it below the record level of 2022. Spring cereals suffered from suboptimal water supply conditions in large parts of the Volga, Ural and Siberian okrugs. However, at national level, yield expectations are average. Harvesting of winter wheat in western Russia and of spring cereals in large parts of Asian Russia was hampered by overly wet conditions, raising concerns about grain quality. Grain maize, in the main production regions, benefited from mild temperatures and adequate soil moisture supply during flowering and early grain filling, resulting in a positive yield outlook at national level.
