A roadmap to strengthen standardisation efforts in risk governance of nanotechnology
A roadmap was developed to advance nano risk governance standardisation. The 2022 baseline for this roadmap are the available documentary standards from the International Organization for Standardization, the European Committee for Standardization, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The concept of nano risk governance was analysed to identify elements that could be standardised, resulting in a set of topical tables with these elements, which are also visualised in a roadmap. Elements include physical chemical characterization, hazard, exposure and risk assessment, socio economic assessment, education, and social dialogue. The roadmap visualises key outcomes of the analysis and summarises the areas of action for standardisation and includes an evaluation on the current level (limited, moderate, intense) of ongoing activities from relevant bodies accompanied by an indication of the time horizon to addressing these areas of action. The identified areas are different with regard to their state of development. Consequently, the number and type of actions varied widely amongst the different actions towards achieving standardisation, and thus, priority areas were also identified. The overall objective of these actions is to strengthen risk governance towards a safe use of nanomaterials and nano-related products. Though not explicitly addressed, risk-based legislation and policies are supported via the proposed standardisation actions.
