In their recent study, Begill, et al. (2023) have questioned the concept of soil C saturation. Since organic matter (OM) can bind to other OM bonded to mineral surfaces, they posit that the physical limitation to MAOC accumulation imposed by the availability of active mineral surface is a false premise and therefore unlimited vertical “skyscraper-like” structure of SOM can be built. We challenge their conclusion here on the basis of solid scientific evidences.
