Resilience of European large and small-sized museums within and outside cities
Cultural venues suffered from prolonged closures, event cancellations, and loss of revenues during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online searches for museums declined considerably at the onset of the pandemic and closely track pandemic stringency measures thereafter. The pandemic had a large and lasting effect on search interest in both urban and rural museums, with the former being harder hit. Large museums experienced a larger decrease in search interest than small museums, largely explaining the rural-urban difference.
