Report of the EURL GMFF proficiency test GMFF-23/01
European legislation on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) requests the monitoring of the presence of GMOs in food or feed by analytical tests. Such monitoring ensures that food and feed products on the market contain only authorised GMOs and that their presence is mentioned on the product label if the content is above a legally defined threshold. The analytical tests are carried out by laboratories designated for official controls by the EU Member States. To assess the uniform and reliable performance of these control laboratories proficiency tests (PTs) are organised by the European Union Reference Laboratory for Genetically Modified Food and Feed (EURL GMFF) in line with Regulation (EU) 2017/625 on official controls. This report summarises the results of the PT “GMFF-23/01” for the determination of GMOs in popcorn maize and soybean flour. The evaluation of the analytical performance of the 70 participating laboratories confirms that most laboratories are able to identify and quantify GMOs in food and feed samples.
