Exploring cultural vibrancy
An analysis of live events in Italian cities and provinces
This report investigates Italian cultural events with a focus on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyze a sample of 18 Italian cities and provinces, examining event and attendance statistics. The data is sourced from the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers (SIAE) and spans from 2018 to 2021.
Our findings underscore differences among event types and their distribution between urban canters and peripheries, revealing the underlying dynamics of local cultural vibrancy and accessibility.
The disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have reshaped Italy's cultural landscape, pausing activities during lockdowns and hindering recovery through subsequent restrictions. Attendance has lagged behind the number of events during the recovery.
As of the end of 2021, the sector has not fully returned to pre-pandemic levels. Questions remain about the lasting impacts of pandemic-induced changes on long-term cultural engagement.
