Centre for Advanced Studies and Exploratory Research Annual Workshop 2022
Anticipation and challenges in research
To improve scientific communication, especially in the context of uncertainty, several strategies were
discussed at the 2022 CAS and ER workshop. These strategies aim to enhance understanding and
collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and the public. They include:
1. Effective Communication of Uncertainty: Express uncertainty in a transparent manner, while
considering audience perceptions and feelings, and using common standards and criteria for
assessment. Employ guidance documents and engage policymakers and the public through open
discussions, through which preparedness is fostered using foresight.
2. Achieving Successful Interdisciplinarity: Overcome traditional academic divisions by defining clear
problems, establishing a common language, and fostering respect among interdisciplinary team
members. The implementation of a long-term strategy, support academic training and career
development, and the use of a top-down and bottom-up approach. Engaging specific scientist
profiles and effective leadership to drive change and encourage interdisciplinary work.
3. Successful Replication in Science: Promote the exchange of data, material, and code following the
FAIR principles, and change incentive structures to encourage sharing. Journals should implement
pre-registration of confirmatory research and specific review criteria for replication.
An effective communication is crucial in bridging the gap between scientists and policymakers. Foresight,
based on co-created assumptions and informed by open debates, increases the preparedness for an
uncertain future.
