Certification of the mass fraction of 3- and 2-MCPD fatty acid esters in infant formula: ERM®-BD087
ERM-BD087 is an infant formula reference material certified for the mass fraction of the fatty acid esters of 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) and the sum of 3-MCPD and 3-MCPD fatty acid esters, the fatty acid esters of 2-MCPD and the sum of 2-MCPD and 2-MCPD fatty acid esters. The material was produced, using a contaminated coconut oil in the recipe.
Between-unit homogeneity was quantified and stability during transport and storage was assessed in accordance with ISO Guide 35:2017.
The material was characterised by an inter-laboratory comparison of laboratories of demonstrated competence and adhering to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Technically invalid results were removed but no outlier was eliminated since no technical reason for deviations was found.
Uncertainties of the certified values were calculated in accordance with ISO 17034:2016 and ISO Guide 35:2017 and include uncertainties related to possible inhomogeneity, instability and characterisation.
The material is intended for the quality control and assessment of method performance.
