Purity assessment of honey based on compound specific stable carbon isotope ratios obtained by LC-IRMS
Objective:To repurpose existing ILC data for estimating repeatability (sr) and reproducibility standard deviations (sR) of differences (Δ δ13C (‰)) between individual honey saccharides using their compound specific δ13C (‰) values.
Results: The sr and sR of Δ δ13C (‰) calculated from the data obtained in the ILC were essentially of the same magnitude as the δ13C (‰) values of the sugar fractions estimated in the ILC. The so obtained precision of Δ δ13C (‰) values were used to estimate the critical difference for comparing a test result with a reference value according to ISO 5725-6:1994, which varied between 0.02 ‰ and 0.40 ‰.
Conclusion: Laboratories employing the validated LC-IRMS method for checking honey purity can use the critical differences for taking account of measurement uncertainty based on the δ13C (‰) values of individual saccharides obtained by LC-IRMS and published purity criteria.
