The European Commission Ecosystem Station in San Rossore
2022 Report
The mission of the European Commission Atmospheric Observatory is to benchmark the impact of European policies and international conventions on air pollution and climate forcing at critical locations. The JRC monitors the exchanges between the biosphere and the atmosphere of greenhouse gases, water and energy, at the Ecosystem Station of the San Rossore Mediterranean Forest, complemented by three collaboration agreements with different institutions interested in accessing and using the research infrastructure. Measurements data can easily be downloaded from the JRC Data Catalogue. Preliminary data suggest that the Mediterranean pine tree forest was a weak sink for CO2 in 2022, resulting in one of the smallest annual uptake of the decade long time series, presumably as a consequence of the persisting hard drought conditions lasting for more than one year at the site. The dataset is also used for preliminary tests of Calibration/Validation of Copernicus products.
