Mapping the complexity of conservation on the continent
For decades, the EU has supported conservation in Africa, and the JRC has provided data and tools to help prioritise conservation funding and interventions, and to understand their impact. This atlas, using data and analyses performed through the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA) programme, highlights the global importance of biodiversity in Africa, geographical variation in the state of African protected areas, the ecosystem services supplied by these areas, and the pressures and threats they face. By synthesising the current scientific landscape, this atlas provides a launchpad for local African institutions to shape the future of conservation on the continent.
