Within the Euratom Research and Training Programme, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) implements nuclear education and training initiatives which support EU policy priorities and contribute to maintaining and developing EU’s nuclear competence and expertise.
This paper describes JRC’s nuclear education and training initiatives in the fields of nuclear safety, nuclear security, nuclear safeguards, strategic trade control, nuclear decommissioning and waste management, as well as nuclear non-power applications. These initiatives target students and graduates, young professionals, national officers, as well as technicians and nuclear experts from various communities: EU, international organisations and, in some cases, third countries. They are mainly provided at the JRC sites where nuclear research and knowledge management activities are conducted, i.e. JRC Karlsruhe in Germany, JRC Geel in Belgium, JRC Petten in the Netherlands and JRC Ispra in Italy. The article describes the schemes offered to grant access to the JRC nuclear laboratories for external researchers and students, thus supporting training, capacity building, as well as intergenerational development and transfer of competencies and skills, as well as the goal and activities of the European Human Resources Observatory for the Nuclear Sector (EHRO-N), operated by the JRC, that monitors demand and supply of human resources and competences in the European nuclear sector and supports the process of establishing national nuclear workforce assessments.
JRC scientific outputs are available to the public for on-line consultation on the JRC Publications Repository and decommissioning knowledge products are disseminated on the EU Science Hub . Several JRC scientists deliver lectures at Universities and collaborate with existing nuclear education organisations and networks in a coordinated manner across the EU and worldwide. Valuable synergies on nuclear education and training are established with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN) and other international stakeholders of the global nuclear education and training community, working together for peaceful, safe and secure use of nuclear energy.
