Old Age does not start at 65
The old-age dependency ratio (OADR) is a simple measure of population ageing, but it lacks the relative and multidimensional perspectives on ageing, which are central to the transition towards a society of longevity.
Every person experiences the natural process of ageing, which is both inevitable and desirable. However, it is important that as people age, they do so in good health. From the perspectives of economists and demographers, the main challenges of ageing are linked to imbalances in the age structure of a population. These challenges stem equally from increased life expectancy and insufficient replacement from younger generations. To address these challenges, the concept of ‘old age’ should become more adaptable. Finally, intergenerational transfers could be maximised across multiple - and not just economic - dimensions.
