Uncovering Inequalities: Colorectal Cancer Screening in Europe
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Europe, with higher mortality in men than in women. Organised, population-based screening for colorectal cancer leads to substantial decreases in cancer incidence and mortality. Implementation of screening, population coverage, participation rate and screening methods vary between European countries, and people with lowest level of education and income and people living in rural areas have reported lower participation rates.Coordinated action at European level can ensure that all citizens have access to cancer care services with an essential level of quality and patient safety. In this regard, a number of policy actions to improve access to and quality of colorectal screening programmes in Europe, as the European Commission Initiative on Colorectal Cancer and the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, are ongoing.
