The SME Twin Transition monitor for the EU
The "SMEs Twin Transition" monitor evaluates the readiness for the digital and environmental transitions of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across the European Union. The monitor encompasses three sub-indices: Digital SMEs, Environmental SMEs, and Resilience Capabilities. Results show a divide, with Northern and Western countries leading the transition, while Southern and Eastern Europe trail. The study also presents a methodology for generating new indicators using firm-level data, which will be incorporated into future developments of the project, along with ongoing efforts to enhance data representation. Despite limitations like SME heterogeneity and data gaps, the monitor's robust methodology ensures reliable assessments, guiding policy for a sustainable, digital EU economy.
