Terrestrial surface albedo dynamics
In 2023, the normalized anomaly (base period: 2003–20) of white-sky albedo in the visible broadband indicated a notable surface darkening (values below −15%) of more than 17% of the land surface, compared to 6% recorded in 2022. The darkening effect over Quebec and Nunavut and over large parts of Siberia were affected by the early melting of surface snow, starting in the second quarter of the year, together with the continuous decline in surface snow cover since the beginning of this century.
