Assessment of the impact of building southern neighbourhood interconnectors on EU wholesale electricity and H2 prices
The collaboration between the two Directorates of the European Commission, Direc-torate-General for Neighborhood and En-largement Negotiations (DG NEAR) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides a novel model driven approach to advance our un-derstanding of EU interconnections beyond Europe while ensuring competitiveness and promoting RES development in the Southern Mediterranean Neighborhood in year 2030.
High quality and granularity of the data are essential for building robust models and therefore meaningful analyses.
The JRC has shown that simulations can be used to identify the importance of future in-terconnection projects and better under-stand their impacts on the European electric-ity and hydrogen markets.
In particular, improving the robustness of data used in the JRC the models below could allow identifying win-win interconnector projects, with the ultimate goal of increasing the imports of clean energy to Europe for the benefits of EU electricity consumers and at the same time promote the deployment of RES and related value chains beyond Europe.
