European Nuclear Fuel Strategic Autonomy
The current state of uranium mining, enrichment, and utilization highlights uranium's exceptional energy density and its central role in nuclear power generation. The political landscape, with changes in operating licenses and strategic alliances, is reshaping the uranium market. The EU, heavily reliant on imports, particularly from Russia, seeks diversification and security in supply chains through initiatives like the development of alternative fuel for Russian-designed VVER reactors. Moreover, HALEU fuels are critical for next-generation nuclear technologies, but EU commercial production is contingent upon investment viability and market demand, with current reliance on Rosatom as the sole supplier. International cooperation and legislation, including the Sapporo 5 alliance and the US Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act, aim to reduce dependency on Russian uranium amidst geopolitical tensions.
