Use of national versus global land use maps to assess deforestation risk in the context of the EU Regulation on Deforestation-free products: case study from Côte d'Ivoire
The report provides guidance on how private operators can use national and global land use maps from 2020 to conduct an initial assessment of the risks of non-compliance with the deforestation-free criteria of the EU Regulation on Deforestation-free products. The specific case of Côte d'Ivoire, the world's largest producer of cocoa, is examined. We compared the JRC global forest map for 2020 and the 2020 national land cover in terms of forest area estimates and forest spatial extent at the country level. Each map presents complementary advantages and limitations. Consequently, we suggest using them in combination as a first step to identify sourcing areas that may require further in-depth checks.
