HIGHLIGHTS Explosives, also known as energetic materials, are reactive compounds that can release high quantities of energy in the form of heat, pressure, light and sound. Explosives are classified into primary and secondary explosives depending on their speed of expansion and sensitivity to stimuli. Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN) is classified a secondary explosive. It is commonly used in detonators and priming compositions.
