The ‘Drivers of Migration: Dimensions and Indicators’ report reviews the existing approaches, research findings and indicators of drivers of migration, considering the policy needs to track and anticipate migratory movements to enhance preparedness in the EU. The drivers encompass structural and dynamic characteristics of countries of origin, transit, and destination according to 8 basic categories: demographic, economic, environmental, human development, political-institutional, security, socio-cultural, and supranational, interconnected and affecting the migration processes in complex ways. Intervening factors are also discussed. Typology of indicators for all dimensions of drivers of migration is put forward, matching the anticipation needs, identifying timely indicators, suited for situational awareness and early warning, frequent indicators for the purposes of forecasting, and static indicators for scenario building. Findings of the report enhance the science for policy contribution of the JRC work to better understand migrations to the EU and to meet the policy needs laid out in the New Pact on Migration.
