Certification of the particle size and size distribution of titanium dioxide and barium sulfate: ERM®-FD104 and ERM®-FD105
ERM-FD104 and ERM-FD105 are fine powder reference materials produced in accordance with ISO 17034:2016. They are certified for the size and size distribution of their constituent particles. The certified reference materials (CRMs) were prepared from commercially available alumina-coated titanium dioxide and barium sulfate powders and are available in glass vials containing about 250 mg of powder. The between-unit homogeneity was quantified and stability during transport and storage was assessed in accordance with ISO 33405:2024. The within-unit homogeneity was quantified to determine the minimum sample size for one measurement of 20 mg. The material was characterised by an interlaboratory comparison (ILC) of laboratories of demonstrated competence and adhering to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The consensus values of the ILC were used for the calculation of the certified values. Uncertainties of the certified values include uncertainties related to possible inhomogeneity, instability and characterisation. The materials are intended for the calibration of methods and for the assessment of method performance.
