Assembling the ground model and the derived values

cover
Guidelines for the application of the 2nd generation of Eurocode 7: Geotechnical design
The Ground Model is defined in the second generation Eurocodes as a ‘site-specific outline of the disposition and character of the ground and groundwater based on results from ground investigations and other available data’. The Ground Model is a compilation of data including maps, plans, sections, and reports that capture objective information regarding the soil and rock types as well as groundwater conditions across the zone of influence. The Ground Model should cover the site and the surrounding area to provide the geotechnical and geological context, potential sources of materials for construction, and the surrounding conditions that may influence the groundworks. The Ground Investigation Report referred to in the Ground Model should be treated as one factual data source for the site's ground and groundwater information. As the Ground Model is an illustration based on derived values and interpolation between factual data, including the distribution of the geotechnical units within the zone of influence, the model itself is the most likely illustration based on the available data during that phase of a project. Inherent uncertainties to such Ground Models may be quantified and reduced during subsequent project phases when more data becomes available. The Ground Model includes, but is not limited to, the following components within the zone of influence: — rockhead & structural geology — superficial geology and geomorphology — seismicity — hydrogeological conditions and — geotechnical and geochemical conditions The derived value of a ground property is a value of a ground property obtained by theory, correlation, or empiricism from test results or field measurements. Derived values presented in the ground investigation report (GIR) are the source for representative values of ground properties to be used in ultimate and serviceability limit state verifications. Data gathered during desk study, site inspection, preliminary and design investigations, and ground and structure monitoring are to establish derived values of ground properties.
