The Influence of Niobium on the High Temperature Oxidation Behaviour of Near Gamma Ti-48Al-2Cr
The influence of Nb added by alloying and ion implantation on the high temperature oxidation behaviour of near gamma Ti-48Al-@Cr was investigated. Oxidation experiments under isothermal and cyclic conditions at 800*C in air revealed that Nb improves the oxidation resistance as well as the scale adherence. Nb does not change fundamentally the corrosion mechanism itself and it could be demonstrated that the often suggested doping mechanism of the titania lattice by Nb5+ ions cannot play an important role to explain the beneficial effect of niobium. Using two-stage ocidation experiments with 16O/15N, some mechanistic aspects were discussed in relation to the formation and existence of a nitride containing layer at the scale/metal interface.
