Minors’ health and social media: an interdisciplinary scientific perspective
European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency roundtables
In fall 2024, ECAT hosted two roundtables with experts on the topic of social media and minors' health. One focused on mental health and the other on physical health. This report summarises the experts' contributions about the state-of-the-art of scientific knowledge on the topics of social media and:
-Depression and Anxiety
-Self-Harm
-Body Image and eating disorders
-Problematic social media use
-Vision
-Brain
-Substance abuse
-Sleep
This report also includes recommendations to various stakeholders (UE, service providers, parents). Those recommendations include awareness raising for children and caregivers, real content moderation, robust age verification processes and better collaborations between service providers and researchers.
