Nuclear and other radioactive material found out of regulatory control consist a radiological hazard and pose a proliferation risk. Therefore, it is important to understand when and where the material was produced, what the intended use was and to provide evidence for prosecuting the perpetrators. The scientific discipline providing pertinent data and information is referred to as Nuclear Forensic Science. The JRC's nuclear forensics laboratory, located in Karlsruhe, Germany, is a state-of-the-art facility equipped with advanced instrumentation and staffed by experienced scientists.
