The use of prior information in the CO2 Monitoring & Verification Support Capacity for the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service
The EU is establishing an observation-based operational anthropogenic CO2 and CH4 emissions Monitoring and Verification Support (CO2MVS) capacity driven by Earth observation data. This CO2MVS combines information from various observational data sets and information of prior knowledge with detailed Earth system models. Besides observations and models, high quality prior information is critical to the success of the CO2MVS. Priors are data which are adjusted by a modelling system to optimally agree with obser-vations given the uncertainties for the prior, observations and model, resulting in optimized posterior emissions or fluxes. The uncertainties associated with the priors are critical for the optimization procedure. In addition to anthropogenic emissions, sufficient knowledge of the natural component is critical.
