Life Cycle Inventory: modelling of pesticides
The Environmental Footprint (EF) methods, recommended by the European Commission, provide standardised metrics for evaluating the environmental performance of products and organisations within the EU. This report describes the outcomes from the Agricultural Working Group (AWG), mile-stone 1 dealing with modelling of pesticides. Pesticides are significant contributors to ecotoxicity and human toxicity effects in agriculture. The report suggests updating pesticide inventory model-ling with a tiered approach, revising characterisation factors for pesticides, and improving human toxicity indicators by considering pesticide residues. It emphasises the need for further research into modelling pesticide emissions in greenhouses and accounting for metabolites. The policy relevance of this work lies in its potential to improve the robustness and accuracy of pesticide impact assess-ments, aiding policymakers in developing regulations that protect human health and the environ-ment under the EF context. The intended audience for this work includes Life Cycle Assessment practitioners and pesticide modellers.
