La educación para la ciudadanía europea: El desarrollo de competencias democráticas e interculturales (Education for European citizenship: The development of democratic and intercultural competences)
The chapter discusses education for European democratic citizenship as a key concept in the promotion of the common values of the European Union. It analyzes the EU policy context in which this concept arises and develops, from the Lisbon Strategy to the present day. Citizenship education is understood as a transformative educational proposal, that seeks to develop democratic and intercultural competencies in students. The chapter highlights the importance of teacher training in this area, and the need for a consensual European educational policy. Methodological proposals and contents for education for European citizenship are presented, and the relevance of innovation and creativity in teaching is underlined.
