Integrating Ecosystem Services into Economic and Financial Decision-Making with a focus on Sustainable Development Goals
The acronym LISBETH stands for LInking ecosystem Services and Benefits to the Economy Through bridging. Its purpose is to explore the applications of ecosystem services (ES) accounts, which measure the contribution of ecosystems to human well-being and economic growth. This is the third of a series of technical reports that provide concrete examples of applications, including descriptive analysis, processing of new indicators, and using ES accounts as input variables in economic models. LISBETH part III presents some applications of ES accounts, including measuring the contribution of ecosystems to human activities and identifying their dependence on ES in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also discusses the use of ES accounts in combination with other data to process new indicators, such as the dependence of fish supply on seagrass and the vulnerability of the agricultural sector to ES. In addition, the report explores the use of ES accounts as input variables in economic models, including the calculation of the Gross Ecosystem Product, the integration of ES into macroeconomic frameworks, and the potential of ES accounts to support the development of sustainable and inclusive economic growth strategies. Overall, the report aims to promote the use of ES accounts and facilitate a measurement system linked to the SDGs. By providing a comprehensive overview of the applications of ES accounts, the report aims to support the development of sustainable and inclusive economic growth strategies that take natural capital into account.
