Putting knowledge and technology to work: Insights from the Innovation Output Indicator
This brief presents the results from the latest edition of the European Commission's Innovation Output Indicator (IOI) for 2024. According to the IOI, the EU27 leads Canada, Australia, and China, but is outperformed by economic partners such as the United States, South Korea and Japan. China exhibited a notable increase in innovation output performance and is rapidly closing its innovation gap with the EU and the US. In addition, the EU economy performs well in exporting knowledge-intensive products made within its borders, but should improve employment in knowledge-intensive industries and the share of innovation-active firms. Sweden, Ireland, Germany and Finland are the best performers among EU Member States. Since 2013, performance improved the most in Lithuania, Estonia, and Sweden, while it declined in Germany, Luxemburg, Romania, and Spain. The brief highlights the association of innovation output performance with resources devoted to innovation and framework conditions that nurture national innovation ecosystems, while it discusses new policies at the EU level aiming to secure the competitiveness and strategic autonomy of the EU through innovation.
