JRC engagement in a changing Arctic
This factsheet focuses on the Joint Research Centre's (JRC) engagement in the Arctic region, highlighting its research activities and contributions to the European Union's Arctic policy. The JRC has been engaged with the Arctic regions since 2016, supporting the EU's Arctic policy through research and involvement in the Arctic Council working groups, focusing on climate change and environmental degradation, terrestrial and marine biodiversity, observation systems, energy supply and infrastructures, and indigenous peoples and knowledge. The JRC's research activities aim to provide evidence-based solutions to the rapidly evolving conditions in the Arctic, including monitoring wildfires, estimating methane emissions from permafrost thawing, and developing monitoring techniques for marine litter and plastic pollution. The JRC also contributes to the launch of the new Polar Task Force in 2025 and participates in the Sustaining Arctic Observation Networks (SAON) to assess the societal benefits of the Arctic Observing System of Systems (AOSS). Overall, the JRC's engagement in the Arctic aims to strengthen the EU's role in the region, enhance capacity for inspecting and tracking the impacts of climate change and human activities, and support inclusive policymaking and meaningful engagement of indigenous groups.
