Life cycle environmental impacts of hydrogen: Challenges, gaps, and selected JRC's contributions
Tools to assess the environmental impacts of hydrogen are essential for promoting the sustainable development goals that the European Union (EU) aims to achieve. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is regarded by the European Commission as the preferred method for this purpose, and several EU policies currently depend on LCA methodologies for their implementation. This paper highlights several challenges and gaps, as well as contributions made by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) towards enhancing existing tools to better assess the environmental impact of hydrogen, thereby providing stronger support for EU policies.
