This paper documents the recent revision of the power sector module in the POTEnCIA model. This integrated energy system model was developed by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission as a tool for analytical support to climate and energy policy in the European Union. The described modelling approach allows to model in detail the transition towards a power system dominated by variable renewable energy and high needs for flexibility. The paper showcases the impact of key modelling choices, as well as the value of modelling flexibility in the power system. This is done through exemplary simulations showing, among other results, the crucial role that demand response, storage, and interconnectors are likely to play in achieving a cost-effective green transition, highlighting the importance of their modelling.
