Land Degradation and the Convergence of Evidence in the Sahel
Using the methodology proposed by the World Atlas of Desertification, in this chapter, we address land degradation in the Sahel as a complex and multidimensional issue. We have identified patterns of human–environment interactions that will likely lead to land degradation. By combining spatial indicators of these patterns with land productivity dynamics derived from Earth Observation data, we highlight zones of probable ongoing land degradation. Our analysis reveals significant variability across the Sahel, with a higher concentration of issues in the southern regions, where human activities place greater stress on natural resources. Our study underscores the need for sustainable land management practices to mitigate conflicts and ensure the long-term viability of agricultural and pastoral livelihoods in the region.
