Some persuasion techniques make misinformation more persuasive but backfire for true information

cover
In an online experiment with 5,121 participants from five EU countries, we examined how seven persuasion techniques influence agreement and perceived persuasiveness of climate change disinformation and factual claims. Persuasion techniques reduced agreement overall, mainly by lowering agreement with true claims. Some techniques (e.g., appeal to authority, black-and-white fallacy) increased agreement with false claims. Findings highlight how misinformation exploits cognitive biases, informing policymaker strategies.
