Certification of the taxon Gadus morhua (Atlantic cod) in fish powder: EURM®-023
EURM-023 is a certified reference material (CRM), consisting of a powder produced from fish fillet. It is certified for its taxon, the species Gadus morhua (Atlantic cod), in accordance with ISO 17034:2016. A certified qualitative property value was assigned as outlined in ISO 33406:2024.
The material was produced at the European Commission’s (EC) Joint Research Centre (JRC) from one fillet originating from a single fish, which was diced, freeze-dried and milled. EURM-023 is available in glass vials, each containing at least 200 mg of fish powder and sealed under an atmosphere of argon.
The between-unit homogeneity and stability during transport and storage were assessed following the recommendations in ISO 33406:2024.
The material was characterised by comparison of measurement results from two different mitochondrial DNA barcoding methods targeting the cytochrome b gene (cytb) and the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (COI), obtained by two laboratories, adhering to ISO/IEC 17025. The uncertainty of the certified value is negligible.
This material is intended for use in method validation, specifically to assess the accuracy of DNA barcoding methods for the identification of the fish species Gadus morhua.
Before release of the CRM, the certification project was subjected to peer-review involving JRC internal experts.
