Consumption and Domestic Footprint models: Monitoring 2010-2023 and Outlook 2030
The Consumption Footprint and the Domestic Footprint are official indicators designed to assess the environmental impacts of EU production and consumption, resulting from modelling thereof.
From 2010 to 2023, the Consumption Footprint increased, while the Domestic Footprint declined over time - suggesting that impacts of EU citizens’ consumption increased, and shifted more environmental burdens to imported goods, produced outside the EU.
In 2023, each 1 € spent on household expenditure resulted in an average 0.23 € of environmental externalities, with food (49% of total impacts), housing (18%) and mobility (17%) being the major contributors.
In 2023, the Consumption Footprint confirms that EU consumption is still unsustainable, exceeding planetary boundaries for 5 out of 16 impact categories of the Environmental Footprint method: climate change, particulate matter, freshwater ecotoxicity, use of mineral and metals resources and fossil fuels.
