Assessment and Data reporting of Significant Acute Pollution events under the MSFD
Criteria D8C3/D8C4 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD)
This technical report provides the state of discussions and development in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) Expert Network on Marine Contaminants regarding acute pollution assessments in the EU. This regards also data sharing on mineral oil spills in Europe, enhancing data comparability and accessibility, and work towards a common understanding of mineral oil spill significance.
It is suggested to develop a joint oil spill data sharing set-up, enabling access of data from different sources, such as MSFD, Ships Source Pollution Directive and Regional Sea Conventions within EMODnet, the European Marine Observation and Data Network. The report compiles information and provides guidance to improve assessment of acute pollution events in European Seas by proposing a definition of ‘significant’ mineral oil acute pollution events, in the context of MSFD D8C3 and D8C4 of Commission Decision (EU) 2017/848.
