Small hydro: Potential and opportunities in the EU and the role of new policies

After an outline of small hydropower in the European Union (present installed capacity and future potential), the opportunities for promoting the development of sustainable small hydro schemes within current EU programmes are discussed, from both technical and socio-economic perspectives. The possibilities for exploiting hidden hydro at existing water infrastructure is highlighted, and it is pointed out that the benefits of small hydro go a long way beyond electricity generation.
